Bruce Speaks
Well at last Mr Pope has spoken after the multiple BS resignations of last week. On the future of the BS he says……
“Believe me when I say the BS will be moving on, strongly as well. People do not devote a quarter of their lives to something only to walk away and let it flounder”.
Sorry Steve but many have been telling you its floundering for ages, numbers down (again) revenue down, waters lost, half the Committee gone. You dont have a clue what to do and if you really care for the BS then let someone who does take over……. now! Your battle cry words have been heard once to often.
Oh some will see this as an opportunity to get on t’committee, those you wouldn’t entertain before no doubt that see it as an easy ego massage , but is that really whats needed? The normally quieter members on the forum are now calling for change and democracy, good job us gobby ones have all gone, will you deliver? will you eck.
As for me, Im just expressing an opinion, as is my right, as a long term ex member who is very disapointed at your utter incompetence.
And, if your going to slag me off on Freds blog please do better than this……
“Looking forward to putting the record straight at some point, as for Tony, small man, small mind with an influence that greatly exceeds his worth but hey for a ticket many will sell their soul“……..
Its poor from a bloke who is smaller than me in both departments and for your information 95% of the HPS dont give a flying fig about the BS and its going on’s. Which when you think about it is the case for most of the barbel anglers in this land……. thats the problem you have failed to solve and nothing will change now, and you know it.
Thats it from me on the BS, or rather whats left of it, its little more than a joke now.
Maybe

The one thing you are wrong on here Tony is the call for democracy. Whenever this has been suggested and as you know I have made the point several times in the last year that having a committee that is accountable to the chairman, appointed by the chairman and dismissed by the chairman, is not a recipe for success; the call is dismissed by the majority of members. I advocate democracy not to see any particular person elected (I don’t think I would even bother voting myself) but because it allows genuine debate, rather than childish abuse and gives people freedom to hold differing views within the same organisation. Dictatorships, no matter how benign they may be, suppress debate and lead to rebellion rather than co operation.
I still believe that the conservation role of the BS is important. It is the only major coarse angling organisation with a conservation role and some cash to back it up. In Pete Reading the BS has one of the few coarse anglers respected widely in the wider world of angling and conservation dominated in the main by game anglers and organisations. It would be very sad to see this fall away just as we have a government, motivated by financial reasons, who intend to hand over a lot of responsibilities of the EA to voluntary organisations.
The divisions, arguments and posturing of various celebrity anglers interest me little and I have no interest in campaigns either for or against personalities involved in the BS’s internal politics, I just hope that it won’t completely collapse just to satisfy particular individuals desire to be slightly bigger fish in a very tiny pool. After all there are less than a few hundred people in the whole world who really give a damn who runs the BS, but there are quite a lot more people who would like to see our rivers run a whole lot better than they are now.
Agree wholeheartedly on the conservation role Pete, but without a thriving BS there wont be one at all. It needs to be so much more than just sticking in barbel here and there though.
I especially liked your last sentence, very true.
My main reason for leaving was the undemocratic way that the BS is run and one uncontrolled individual of course. I was told once by a ’senior’ figure that the rank and file of the committee do not care about the day to day running and I quote ‘to be honest Conrad it’s best that way, most are too stupid to be trusted with something so important!’ He went on to say that giving the membership a vote would be obstructive and get in the way. That did it for me.
I was heavily influenced by the conservation role when I joined. I will rejoin if the BS ever becomes democratic. I won’t hold my breath.
I don’t have the energy to fight over it so I just got out.

Conrad,
Being stupid myself who would say that ?
Where did this idea come from that you are some sort of leader of an anti BS resistance group? Do people really think that you are sat in a big leather chair, stroking a white cat whilst plotting the downfall of modern civilisation?
Paranoia is a dangerous ailment.
By the way, I wasn’t told to write this by Tony, just so you all know
Dave,
Spooky, I have tried to put Mr Pope right on that score this very afternoon. I think he accepts that it is not the case now.
Well Specki it was someone that I thought had plenty of influence. I do not wish to name names in case he finds himself forced to deny my claims and tell me yet another lie.
